I waited a few days to see if inspiration would direct me even more on how to write the piece, and honestly I wasn't getting much help upstairs. I pulled out my notebook (yes, I still write my ideas by hand a lot before typing them), and I started to write.
I came up with "Oblivious" as the title. I got a few stanzas in and realized I hated the direction I was going.. I flipped the page and started "Oblivious II". I didn't even get more than a line written. Writers block at its finest.
It happens. Sometimes the genius ideas just aren't ready to peck their way out of the shell. So, I decided to do something fun I had witnessed passing through Facebook. It was a numbered list of questions involving music. You were supposed to let your friends pick a number and either answer it or they would answer it.. Depending on what version you came across.
I decided instead to make a blog post of all the different questions and my answers to them. I think it'll be cool to reflect back on the music I relate to the different situations and see how my answers change. Plus, I love doing music blogs! They're my favorite!
1. A song with a color in the title:
I have two for you that came to mind instantly. The first is Chris' favorite, and a really good song, of course. That's probably why it came to mind first. It's "Black" by Pearl Jam.
The second is a song that I love by Weezer, "Pink Triangle".
2. A song you like with a number in the title.
This one was pretty easy for me. One of my all time favorite songs that I sing word for word in full performance mode in my car.. I have no shame. "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" by the Proclaimers.
3. A song that reminds you of summer
This one was pretty easy for me, too. I listen to this song just about every day. It's freeing. It embodies an escape, and it just makes me feel like summertime is here. I can't explain it, but it makes sense in my head.
4. A song that reminds you of someone you'd rather forget.
It reminds my of my ex husband and my ex marriage. Gross. Enough said. "I Won't Give Up" by Jason Mraz.
5. A song that needs to be played LOUD.
Easy- "Carry On" by fun. I feel like I could ride in a car, sticking out of the sunroof, going through a tunnel while this song plays- "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" style.
6. A song that makes you wanna dance.
What's funny is I have been jamming and dancing to this song since "Scorpion" was released, and I thought I was a little weird for dancing so hard to it. My aunt just showed me a dance challenge people are doing to the song now, so I guess I'm not that weird after all. It's "In My Feelings" by Drake.
7. A song to drive to:
Easily "White Iverson" by Post Malone. The flow is just right for sticking your arm out the window and riding the wind while you drive. Perfection.
8. A song about drugs/alcohol:
I am almost ashamed, but mostly proud, to admit that I know all the words to this next song. What bothers me, and I talk about this all the time, is the fact that I was very young when I learned this song- as in 4th grade or younger. Why did I know all the lyrics? Why was I cool for knowing them all and singing them on the bus ride to our elementary school? I have no idea, but it's "Crazy Rap (Colt 45 & 2 Zig Zags)" by Afroman.
9. A song that makes you happy:
Easy. A daily listen for me, just about.
"Someday" by Sugar Ray
10. A song that makes you sad:
This song reminds me so much of my grandma, and it holds a special place in my family. It's "Save a Place for Me" by Matthew West.
11. A song you never get tired of:
It needs no introduction.. It's just good stuff! "Shoop" by Salt N Peppa.
12. A song from my preteen years:
Easily my favorite song from that era.. It's another that I perform in my car for an audience of me. "Yeah!" by Usher.
13. One of your favorite 80's songs.
This is easily my all time favorite 80's song. I am 24 years old, and I am still not tired of hearing this song. Good stuff.
"Hungry Like the Wolf" by Duran Duran
14. A song that you'd love played at your wedding.
Honestly, I almost skipped this for so many reasons. The first one being, I don't really plan on getting married again. But, for the sake of the list being completed I figured I would put in a tune. I'm a Disney nerd, so I really wanted to play "Tale as Old as Time" at my wedding, but my ex was not having it. So, I am going to put it here.
15. A song that's a cover by another artist.
Am I putting too much Weezer in this blog? Trick question: there's no such thing. Here's "Africa" covered my Weezer.
16. One of your favorite classical songs.
Are you ready for this? Because I am going to BLOW your minds, Ariana Grande lovers! This is one of my all time favorites to listen to when I just want to truly appreciate Ariana's vocals. So beautiful! Also, you can never get tired of hearing Andrea Bocelli! "E piu ti penso" by Andrea Bocelli ft. Ariana Grande. Enjoy.
17. A song you'd duet karaoke to:
No one who truly knows me is going to be surprised at this answer. My mom is probably going to laugh and cringe when I say it because winter time was literally just Grease on repeat during snow days. I'm a sucker for a good Travolta musical. This is my favorite by far. Also, check out their Christmas album if you're a fan. Good stuff!
"Summer Nights" by John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John
18. A song from the year I was born.
I had to put in a Nirvana song, naturally. "Heart Shaped Box" by Nirvana was released in 1993. Good stuff.
19. A song that makes you think about life:
Easily "Romeo & Juliet" by Hobo Johnson. My man. He is absolutely brilliant.
20. A song that has many meanings to you:
Another easy one for me. "Sappy- Early Demo" by Kurt Cobain. Specifically this version, actually. It speaks to me in various ways where as the Nirvana version just sounds like a tune I listen to because I should. It's hard to explain.
21. Favorite song with someone's name in the title:
It's sort of hard to pick, but I love the Beatles so I want to include a tune from them at least once in here! A classic that just never gets old: "Hey Jude".
22. A song that moves you forward:
Oh, I have to give you a song by my girl Alanis. It just wouldn't be right to not include her since she has literally gotten me through some of the darkest shit I've dealt with. Here is "Hand in my Pocket" which I also listen to just about every day. Good stuff.
23. A song that you think everyone should listen to:
One of my favorites, "Peach Scone" by HoboJo, yo.
24. A song by a band you wish were still together:
I like Oasis, I love "Wonderwall". Yes, I know, it's their most well known song. I can't help but love it. It's always been such a good song to me.
25. A song by an artist no longer living:
"Hurt" by Johnny Cash is one of my favorites. I also like the Nine Inch Nails cover of it, which I will also attach here because why not?
26. A song that makes you want to fall in love:
Oh my, this is a good one. I love, love, love this song! It's new and on the top charts, so you've all probably been jamming to it for weeks now. It's "Boo'd Up" by Ella Mai. Peep that cameo by Khalid in the go carts! Cool stuff.
27. A song that breaks your heart:
Pearl Jam's song "Even Flow" for sure. Also my favorite Pearl Jam song. Great meaning, and I think it speaks volumes.
28. A song by an artist with a voice that you love:
"Zombie" by the Cranberries. Dolores O'Riordan has such a beautiful voice, in my opinion. I love singing along and matching vocals with her.
29. A song you remember from your childhood:
"Work It" by Missy Elliott. I love telling the story of me jamming to Lil' Kim, my mom ejecting it, and my throwing the CD out the window of our Tracker. It still makes me roll laughing.
I don't know why she never threw out my Missy Elliot CD. I'm glad she didn't, though, because this song is one of my all time favorite jams.
I never really listen to Lil' Kim.. That helped me choose sides when Nicki came along, so really my mom is the reason I am a big Nicki Minaj fan. She is going to hate reading that! Anyways, here's the edited version. Sorry I couldn't find the original in a music video!
30. A song that reminds you of yourself.
There are a couple that I continually feel relate to me as a person, so I am going to place both here.
The first is "You Oughta Know" by Alanis Morissette. It's petty, heartbroken, and honest. Painfully honest. I love it, and I have found myself in similar situations reacting the same way, so I feel like it is a good song to attach to me as a person.
The second is "Wildflowers" by Tom Petty. I couldn't do a list of songs without at least one song by Petty, duh. But also, this song really just connects with me. I feel like it's a good song to listen to and think, "Yeah, this is for me. This speaks to me. I deserve this."
This was fun, and I hope you enjoyed reading through! Feel free to comment with your list, or write a blog post of your own on it! I would love to see it!
